A Dream Home for Retirement and Beyond

The Challenge

My clients wanted to build a custom home next door to the home where they had raised their family. Their goal was to remain in this new home through the aging process, so they needed a design that took that into account. They also wanted to create the perfect space for hosting visiting family and friends.

The Solution

I developed a design in which everything necessary for day-to-day life (including the master bedroom) was situated on the home’s first floor. I also generated a second-floor layout that includes two bedrooms and a bathroom, with a door that can seal off the entire floor at the top of the stairs. This feature minimizes disruption from house guests, while offering privacy and comfort. At a later date, I assisted my clients in designing a connecting structure between the main house and outbuilding. We worked around the existing landscape features and main house to incorporate a staircase and deck at the second-floor family suite level. The connecting structure not only added function, but also balanced the aesthetic of the two buildings and the property. I’m pleased to report that since our work together, they have been enjoying visits with family and the ease of their comfortable new layout.
